remedies to rid bed bugs

“Goodnight, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” This saying from years gone by harkens back to the time when bed bugs were simply just a part of life. Due to the fact that there was no real way to fight back against infestations, bed bugs were overwhelming. They did see a reduction in numbers during the 70s and 80s, but since then have been on the rise once again.  In recent years, there are active bed bug infestations in virtually all countries and cities all over the world. Thankfully, there are natural remedies to rid bed bugs so you don’t have to turn to harsh chemicals to fight back against a bed bug infestation in your home. You can rid your home of these pesky house guests by using the following natural remedies.

Natural Remedies to Rid Bed Bugs

Lavender:

Lavender oil is a natural and effective insect repellent. It can also be used to discourage the growth of a bed bug population. It is believed that the taste and smell of the herb repel the bugs. The easiest and most effective way to apply lavender is to put dried lavender between two pieces of cloth. Then, put them together and sew them around the perimeter of your bed. You can usually find lavender in health food stores. It can also be used in its liquid form, which is concentrated. The fragrance will typically last for a few weeks. To apply the liquid form, rub lavender oil on your bed frame and the floor around your bed.

Tea Tree Oil:

Tea tree oil has a pungent, strong odor. Because of this, using tea tree oil can keep bed bugs from coming near your bed. The easiest way to apply tea tree oil is via a spray bottle. Spray your bed and any other affected areas.

Cayenne Pepper:

Some believe that cayenne pepper can also keep bed bugs away. Test the theory by sprinkling a little cayenne pepper in an area and make note if you see activity across that line.

Mint Leaves:

Native Americans used wild mint leaves to keep bugs away from their beds. They would apply it by crushing mint leaves and sprinkling them around their sleeping areas. They would also place mint leaves within the cradle boards used to transport small children and babies. They found it an effective way to keep bugs out of their beds, and today, you too can use it to ensure your bed is bug-free. The easiest way to apply mint leaves is placing sachets of dried leaves between your mattresses. You can also use it in other parts of your home to deter other types of bugs.

Other Tips For Getting Rid of Bed Bugs:

In addition to the natural remedies listed above, you can also try the following tricks to get rid of bed bugs:

  • Wash All Fabrics: When fighting a bed bug infestation, it’s important to wash all bed linens and clothing that has come into contact with bed bugs in hot water. Bed bugs can’t withstand the temperature.
  • Locate The Bugs: When you are fighting a bed bug infestation, it’s important for you to know where they are hiding. Since they wait until dark to come out, they are hard to find. Use a flashlight to look for the bugs. Check your headboard, bed frame, mattress and box springs.
